My very first blog post ever!

HI! For those of you who don't know me, my name is Emily Moscol. I have worked at Olin since 2004 in Campus Services, and made the move to Admission in August. I love working over here, it's really a wonderful feeling being able to be part of this admission team as well as this blog, as a new Assistant Director of Admission at Olin.

A little bit about me: I am a native Bostonian, born and raised in Roslindale. I went to UMass Amherst for my undergraduate degree, where I was an RA (Resident Assistant) and majored in Legal Studies. I was all geared up to go to Law School when I decided that it wasn't the path that I wanted my life to take. I went to UMass Boston instead and got my Master's degree in Dispute Resolution, which encompassed negotiation and mediation. I worked for a while at a group home for adolescents in Jamaica Plain, and then I decided that I needed a change. Olin College was exactly what I was looking for, and coming to work here was one of the best decisions I ever made. The community here is really quite unique, and getting up and going to work each day to a place where you are excited to be is one thing that I have come to value very much.

I am still learning a lot about Admissions in general, and I have been so surprised by how intense the process has become since I went to college (not THAT long ago!). The young adults that I have met in info sessions seem to be experts by the time they are juniors in high school! Part of my job includes planning events for our division, including Fall Open House (which is coming up, RSVP on our website as space is extremely limited), Career Initiatives Day, Family Weekend, and Candidates' Weekends. The entire community gets involved in these events, either through the planning process, volunteering, or running sessions. It makes the culmination of the event that much more satisfying when you know that so many people were part of it.

Another part of my job here is that I am the staff advisor to the Honor Board. This has been a really interesting experience. I have learned a lot from the students by being a part of this process. The fact that it works so well is a testament to the intelligence and maturity of our students.

If you have any questions for me you can either comment or you can email me directly. I look forward to hearing from you!!!!

PS: Keep those blog titles coming!! We love hearing your suggestions!

The winds of change...

So apparently I freaked out a few people with my mysterious "winds of change" comment - heheh... ;) Not to worry, it was just an oblique reference to the fact that there will be some changes to this blog in the near future.

COMING SOON - I will be joined by my colleagues, Assistant Directors of Admission Caitlin Snow and Emily Moscol! We hope to provide y'all with even more perspectives/information on Olin College and our admission process. But most important of all, with three of us on the job, there will be more posts than last year. Woohoo! I know that you check this blog every day, just waiting for something new and interesting to pop up... well I know that's not really true, but a girl can dream, right?!? :-P

That said, this means that we'll need a snazzy new name for our blog - if you have any clever ideas or suggestions, just let us know (i.e. write a comment below). We're open to just about anything! Also, don't be shy about letting us know if there are any particular topics you'd like us to tackle this year...

We hope to hear from you,

Deadlines... A little clarification

"I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by." ~Douglas Adams

So there have been some questions... OK... a lot of questions about our December 1st deadline. Let's see if I can shed some light on some of the confusion:

  1. This is our regular deadline! We still only have ONE deadline - no Early Decision and no Early Action. For those of you wondering why we would do such a radical thing as move our deadline up an entire month, well, it basically comes down to our desire to spend more quality time with y'all - or rather your applications... it is is no way meant to be seen as cruel and unusual punishment! In the past, we only had 3-4 weeks to read ALL of the applications but now that more of you are applying, one month simply isn't enough time for us to read all of those applications in a meaningful way. Given the timeline of our unique 2-part application process and the increased applicant pool, we now need a few more weeks to thoughtfully evaluate your applications.
  2. The December 1st deadline is for submission of the online portion of the application. Other pieces of your application - letters of recommendation, transcript(s), senior grades - may arrive after the deadline, but please try to get everything delivered or postmarked by December 1st.
  3. What does this mean for standardized testing?!? Breathe. Inhale. Exhale. We realize that there is an SAT test date on December 1st as well as an ACT test date on December 8th - please do not stress about this! If you need to register for the 12/1 SAT or 12/8 ACT, you may certainly do so; we usually receive scores from the testing companies about 3 weeks later. However, we strongly encourage you to complete all of your standardized testing prior to December 1st so that we can begin reviewing your application as soon as possible after the deadline.

I hope that makes a bit more sense to everyone. Now that classes are back in session, so is this blog.... I should definitely have a couple more posts in the next few days.

FYI - the winds of change are blowing...I'll make a formal announcement soon. :)

Time to rejoin our first Saturday Information Session of the season!

Take care,
