Yesterday, Olin hosted 40 different companies and organizations for our annual Career Initiatives Day. Students were given the day off from class in order to attend sessions like "Creating Your Own Start-up Company", "International Scholarships and Fellowships 101″ and "Service to Society." There were also presentations throughout the day about Olin's different majors, so that freshmen and sophomores could pick the brains of the faculty who teach within those majors. The afternoon featured a large career fair, with a wide variety of companies attending in order to talk to students and gather resumes from potential interns and employees. The Office of Post Graduate Planning has been working hard this fall to get students prepared for this day. There was a "dos and don'ts" fashion show, a resume workshop, plus a workshop on how to approach and talk to corporate recruiters. Our campus is usually quite casual, and I am accustomed to seeing students in pajamas and hoodie sweatshirts heading to class, so seeing them in suits, ties, skirts and heels was a little startling! They looked really great, and I think it showed our corporate guests that we take them seriously.
A nice feature of this year's event were the alumni who came back to campus to represent their companies. We had 25 alums here, from all three of our graduated classes. It was a great chance for our current students catch up with people they know and also get some advice about specific classes and projects that will prepare them for the type of work they do at a particular company. Many stayed for an Alumni Panel, which occurred later in the afternoon, when students could ask candid questions about their preparation for the Real World, thoughts on the current financial crisis, and their adjustment to being working adults. All in all, it was a great day, and Emily and I (who helped with some of the behind-the-scenes details) are ready to move on to the next event, Family Weekend! October is a busy month for us, but we like it that way. Here are some pictures I took of the job and internship fair.
