September 2009 Archives

On September 11th, Olin hosted a Bone Marrow and Stem Cell Donor Drive.Members of the community were encouraged to find out more about the National Marrow Donor Program, and make the commitment to join. This was not a commitment to be taken lightly- donors stay in the national database until they are 61, and can be called at any time if there is a transplant match. The drive was quite a success, and 120 people from the Olin community are now members of the program. This included faculty, staff, students, neighbors from the Needham and Wellesley areas, and also three alums who donated in their home states. The drive was organized partly as an initiative for the National Day of Service, and partly in honor of our own Vice President of Academic Affairs, Mike Moody, who is fighting a form of lymphoma. Below are some pictures taken of the volunteers who organized the event, as well as participants in the drive. Many thanks to all who volunteered and participated!

Becoming a donor involves swabbing the insides of your cheeks to gather cells so that your tissue type can be tested.

Welcome back and an introduction!

Hello, everyone!

Welcome back to Olin!  I am excited to have all of you back on campus, and look forward to getting to know each of you.

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself.  My name is Laura Cotten and I joined the staff at Olin College in mid-August.  My role at Olin is two-fold.  My title is the Assistant Director of Admission and Post Graduate Planning, and as this indicates, I will spend half of my time working with the Admission staff, and half of my time working with the Post Graduate Planning staff.  I have enjoyed the past few weeks getting to know the staff in each office, and learning more about Olin.

I have just completed my Master of Education in Higher Education Administration from the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia.  Prior to this I lived and worked in the DC area.  I earned my Bachelor of Science in Anthropology from James Madison University, also in Virginia.  As you can tell, I have spent most of my adult years in the Commonwealth of Virginia, or nearby.  This is in fact my first time living and working in Massachusetts, so I am very excited to be here!  As my colleagues will tell you, I am slightly nervous about our upcoming winter season, but I hope I will be able to adjust well!

Please feel free to stop by if I can answer any questions, or if you would just like to say hi!

Laura
