October 2009 Archives

We are hosting our annual Fall Open House this Sunday, October 25th. You should come! It's a great opportunity to meet Olin professors, talk to students, learn about our curriculum and see the campus. Our students have planned several activities that we know you will enjoy. Since we will be closing the RSVP system on Wednesday, you need to RSVP now! In the meantime, here are a few random pictures of Olin students that I like, because they display the spirit of adventure that makes our campus so much fun!

During my information sessions, I tend to note that Olin has a noncompetitive atmosphere among its students. Olin does not report class rank and our graduates do not receive Latin honors, so most students have no real sense of where they stand academically in relation to their peers. I rarely hear students discussing grades, except in the "I'm pretty sure I failed that quiz" sense. We think that this noncompetitive atmosphere is healthy, and the students I have talked to about this agree.

This past Friday, I heard some shouting out on the Oval (or "O" as most people at Olin call it). A dodge ball game had started, and when I walked out to watch, I was informed by Mechanical Engineering professor Jessica Townsend that this was a grudge match between Mechanical Engineering (MechE) and Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) majors. There were several matches, and from my standpoint, I saw both sides win at least one match. It appeared that the MechEs won the day, but honestly I have no idea. (Students- feel free to correct me.) Below are some wonderful pictures taken by Johannes ('12). Noncompetitive? You decide. :)

Check out the face/glasses separation! Carl ('10) is clearly a force to be reckoned with.
